The Birth of a Legacy

It all began in 1951 when RFD Canada, a small but ambitious company, set up shop in Granby. With a steadfast focus on Marine MRO, particularly life rafts, this venture laid the groundwork for what would become a defining journey in the world of safety and protection.

A New Home, A New Identity

By 1968, the company had outgrown its beginnings. A move to Hawkesbury marked a significant milestone, along with a new name: Tul Safety Equipment Ltd. The new name reflected a deepening commitment to providing safety solutions, a legacy that would continue to evolve.

The Birth of Tulmar

In 1992, Tulmar was incorporated, marking the official start of a new chapter. With a strong foundation in place, the stage was set to push the boundaries of what safety equipment could achieve.

Acquisitions and Innovations

1997 saw the acquisition of the LifeRamp, a key addition that bolstered the company’s offerings and solidified its position as an industry leader. Six years later, in 2003, the maritime pouch jacket was introduced to the line of personal flotation devices supplied to the Canadian Forces’ Navy—a testament to Tulmar’s growing influence in the military industry.

But that wasn’t all. 2003 also marked the creation of the first version of the Hammerhead Life Preserver, a product that would soon become synonymous with innovation and reliability in life-saving equipment.

Expanding Horizons

The years that followed were marked by significant growth. In 2005, Tulmar became an approved reseller and repair station for AMSAFE aviation belts, further diversifying the portfolio. The next year, similar approvals were earned for Winslow life rafts, and in 2007, EAM Worldwide life rafts and life vests were added to the repertoire.

The Hammerhead Life Preserver earned the company’s first patent in 2006, a milestone that underscored a dedication to innovation. And as capabilities expanded, so did the identity. In 2007, Tulmar rebranded, adopting a fresh green color scheme, and established Tulmar Technical Services Inc. (TTS), to better serve clients with specialized technical support.

Redefining the Image

2012 was a pivotal year for Tulmar. The company rebranded once more, this time adopting the red and grey color scheme that has become today’s signature look. Alongside this visual transformation, the signature lockable net was engineered, quickly becoming a staple in the product line.

Partnerships and Progress

By 2017, partnerships had grown to include Essex Industries, with a collaboration to create the Essex Training PBE. That same year, the Leopard Tank life preserver was added to the family of personal flotation devices supplied to the Canadian Forces’ Army, further deepening ties with the military.

Continuous Innovation

2018 brought the reinvention of the training slide, a product meticulously redesigned—though the details of its welded construction remain undisclosed. In 2019, the Classroom Girt Trainer was launched, the Baby Bassinet was acquired, and the tradition of innovation continued with the introduction of a modernized Inflatable Shelter in 2020.

Rising to the Challenge

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was a challenge met head-on. Tulmar quickly pivoted to create face shields, joining the global fight against the virus. That same year, the training PBE family expanded with the Air Liquide Style Training PBE, ensuring clients had the tools needed to stay safe.

A New Era

In 2022, Tulmar launched a re-envisioned Passenger Restraint Kit for the aviation market, reinforcing a commitment to safety and innovation. And most recently, in 2023, a new partnership with SAAB Barracuda was proudly announced, a collaboration that promises to further enhance capabilities and reach.

The Journey Continues

From humble beginnings in Granby to becoming a global leader in safety solutions, Tulmar’s journey has been one of continuous growth, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to protecting those who protect us. As the future unfolds, the focus remains on pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, driven by the same pioneering spirit that has guided the company since 1951.
